Toxic algal bloom killing birds in North Canterbury
A spate of birds dying at the Kaiapoi Lakes is more than likely due to an algal bloom caused by increased housing nearby, experts believe.
Environment Canterbury principal scientist Adrian Meredith said the lakes were currently subject to a warning for phytoplankton cyanobacteria bloom, which can kill animals and is harmful to young children.
While it was unclear whether toxicity from the bloom or associated bacterial infection (avian botulism) was directly responsible for killing the ducks, it would not be unexpected, he said.
