Last Monday the leading story on our Stuff website was the Whittaker's chocolate company revival of the toffee milk chocolate bar. This had the media asking what sweet treats people would like to see returned next and what prized New Zealand lollies may have their production shifted overseas.We want to know what your favourite discontinued treat is. Tsunami Risks – What’s the rush? Tsunamis are an ever present threat to coastal New Zealand. What are the implications for Petone and the inner harbour area? Dr William Power will discuss the areas of high risk around the Hutt and Wellington regions and discuss initiatives to protect local communities and raise awareness about the danger that tsunamis present. Coming this Labour Weekend in … View moreHave you been wondering what those lights in the sky the past few nights have been about? It's not Batman (sorry to disappoint) but it is something very exciting.
We're announcing a brand new annual event for Lower Hutt, HighLight: Carnival of Lights!
Coming this Labour Weekend in October, HighLight will transform Riddiford Garden in central Lower Hutt into a wonderland of brilliant light installations and live performances. Over four days visitors to the light carnival can enjoy walking through the gardens and immersing themselves in the various displays, live entertainment and interactive features. The event will be open to all ages and will be FREE to attend.
Installations currently being planned for the carnival include a giant lightbulb suspended in mid-air, with an illuminated performer putting on a display inside. Kids will glow in the dark in a UV-light kid’s area, including special dipping paint that will turn their hands into a kaleidoscope of colours. Each night eyes will turn skyward for a fireworks display. These are just the start, with many more exciting projects to be announced in the months ahead.
HighLight, and another multi-day event in 2018, will be replacing Petone Winter Carnival.

The recent chlorination of Lower Hutt’s water supply is to continue while investigations into the source of recent positive E.coli test results are underway. This is likely to take many months to complete. Water remains safe to drink.

This is likely to take many months to complete. Water remains safe to drink.
A sample from a bore in the Waterloo wellfield returned a positive E.coli result on 12 April 2017. This was the third positive E.coli result in five months from water sourced from the Waiwhetu Aquifer. This, plus recent water quality testing across the aquifer showing an increasing amount of bacteria activity, has led to the decision to keep chlorinating the Lower Hutt water supply network while investigations are ongoing.
The public fountains at Buick Street (Petone) and Dowse Square (central Lower Hutt) have been closed as a precautionary measure because they can’t be chlorinated.
We’re taking a cautious and vigilant approach because public safety will always be our most important consideration.
We don’t know what has caused this to happen, that’s what the investigation is for, but one possibility at this very early stage is it could be related to the November 2016 earthquake.
