Shock closure of one of last remaining student pubs a 'sad day for Dunedin'

Nicole Reporter from Dunedin News

There will be no final orders in one of Dunedin’s last remaining student pubs – Starters Bar will not reopen, the Otago University Students’ Association (OUSA) has confirmed.

OUSA made national headlines when it bought the bar, known to generations of former students as The Oriental, in December 2018.

That bar, which reopened in time for Orientation 2019, was designed to be “a safe entertainment option for students, particularly first-year students”, events manager Jason Schroeder said.

But the bar, which has been shut since the nationwide lockdown, will remain closed due to health and safety concerns about the building. OUSA is now looking for an alternative venue.

Poll: Should all neighbours have to contribute to improvements?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

An Auckland court has ruled a woman doesn’t have to contribute towards the cost of fixing a driveway she shares with 10 neighbours.

When thinking about fences, driveways or tree felling, for example, do you think all neighbours should have to pay if the improvements directly benefit them?
