One dead after suspicious house fire in suburban Christchurch
Police are at the scene of a suspicious house fire where a person has died in suburban Christchurch.
A police spokeswoman said they were called to the suspicious blaze at the Caulfield Ave, Halswell home just after 12.30pm on Wednesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gregg Cottam said police and fire crews found a person dead at the home. The cause of death was "unexplained" at this stage, he said.
Christchurch metro area commander David Stackhouse said two fire crews from Wigram and Spreydon attended the blaze.
He said the blaze was described as a "smouldering fire" and was extinguished not long after arrival.
The cause of the fire was unknown. Police and fire investigators would investigate, he said.
