One-off original NZ artwork – BirdCare Aotearoa charity auction
Award-winning sculptural artist, Cathy from Cathy Jane Designs has created a very special commission piece especially for BirdCare Aotearoa. This stunning one-off sculptural embroidery is handmade in NZ and inspired by one of three moho pererū (banded rails) raised and rehabilitated by BirdCare Aotearoa.
The three banded rails were admitted to BirdCare Aotearoa as hatchlings. On arrival, they weighed only 10 grams. Two arrived in very unstable condition but with the dedicated care of the BirdCare Aotearoa team, they grew into strong, healthy birds and were released at a predator-controlled site this week.
This auction will raise money for a native species habitat which will help ensure the successful rehabilitation of banded rails, kōtare (sacred kingfisher) and other native species – giving them the best chance of release into the wild where they belong.
Please show your love for NZ wildlife and support BirdCare Aotearoa’s life-saving work by bidding generously. Not only will you be directly helping wildlife, you will also get the chance to have this beautiful and unique artwork in your own home.
Artwork details:
* One-off original, beautifully capturing the rail in his juvenile stage.
* Handmade in Cathy’s studio, the piece is made up of hundreds of tiny stitches, made on a sewing machine, and finished by hand embroidery.
* Professionally framed in a white frame with high grade glass (ultimate clarity, reduced reflection and 99% UV protection).
* Size: 22cm x 22cm x 4.5cm deep.
100% of the proceeds will go directly to BirdCare Aotearoa, supporting them to continue caring for banded rails and other wild birds.
Thank you so much to Cathy for creating this exquisite artwork and thank you in advance to all of you wonderful bidders!

Kia ora team
Our special partnership with Metlifecare continues, and we have some great content to share with readers about people living their best lives in retirement.
This issue we look at some of the worthwhile volunteer roles retirees are filling in our communities, learn about mindfulness at any age, and check out some Kiwi beach travel options while the good weather lasts.
Don’t forget to try out our nostalgia quiz - it’s for anyone who wants to test the Kiwi knowledge they’ve picked up over the past four, five, six or more decades.
