The city council is holding an extraordinary meeting on Thursday to discuss changing the preliminary design after it emerged the original concept – with a seating capacity of up to 30,000 – would blow the budget by $131.4m. A venue with 5000 fewer seats is now being mooted.

By adopting the new stadium design concept, securing a major test match – against the likes of Australia, South Africa and the Lions – would require the city to pay an incentive fee, up to about $1.2 million.

With 30,000 seats, it is understood the fee could be closer $800,000.

Hi neighbours,

A majority of city leaders have decided to reduce the capacity of Christchurch’s new stadium, from 30,000 seats to a minimum of 25,000, to bring the project in on budget.

Councillors and senior staff attended the extraordinary meeting on Thursday morning to decide on a design change to the stadium after it was publicly revealed the original preferred concept, which could have up to 30,000 seats, would have been over budget by up to $131.4 million.

A majority of councillors endorsed the staff recommendation to lower the number of seats to 25,000 – but designers have been directed to try and find efficiencies moving forward to get the capacity to about 27,500.

Let us know your thoughts below.

Low levels of digital literacy among staff is a challenge facing many manufacturing businesses, and strengthening those skills is not only essential to meet rapid technological changes in the workplace, it’s vital to increasing productivity.

“As technology progresses and we move further into Industry 4.0, workers must be upskilled to keep pace with new systems and processes, especially older employees who are not digital natives, but who have invaluable experience in their fields,” says Competenz Sector Manager Jahn Vannisselroy

Last weekend's show at Christchurch Arena featured more than 200 LEGO exhibits of iconic buildings, recognisable landscapes and movie scenes.

One exhibit was a microscale model of the Christchurch Museum and The Arts Centre, Te Matatiki Toi Ora, as well as a section of the Botanical Gardens and a row of historic houses.

Organiser Treena-Marie Aldridge said this year’s show featured the biggest exhibits ever displayed since the Christchurch Brick Show began in 2012.

The Brick Show was cancelled in 2020 and the exhibits for this year were at least two years in the making.

About 22,000 people went through the door over the two days, a record number, organisers said.

The next Christchurch Brick Show will be held on July 16 and 17 next year.

Did you go along this year?
