If you want to be proactive yourself, you could print a few copies of the attached notice and do a letterbox drop in your own street, even if it’s just five houses on either side of you and a few across the road. That’s what being a good neighbour is all about!

If you're a dog owner, you're welcome to join us at the ‘opening’ of the newly-fenced dog exercise area at Taylor Park in Tawa.

Northern Ward councillors Malcolm Sparrow, Jill Day and Peter Gilberd are organising a low-key opening at 1pm on Saturday 15 July. Bring along your canine companion to enjoy some K9 treats and a run around the dog park.

Council fenced the dog exercise area at Ian Galloway Park in Wilton last year. This year’s project, Taylor Park, has just about been completed. Next year will be the turn of a dog park in the southern suburbs.

Drive through the car park for Redwood Station (south) and park outside the badminton hall which is alongside Taylor Park. See you there!

Here's the latest update from Wellington EOC (Emergency Operations Centre):

"Wellington CBD is open except for limited areas around Featherston Street.

Wellington's central business district (CBD) will be largely open for business on Tuesday 15 November.

Employees are encouraged to check with their employers to see whether their workplace is open tomorrow.

Train services have not yet resumed but bus services are operating.

Wellington City Council has closed most of Featherston Street and a number of associated areas for safety reasons until potential falling debris concerns are addressed.

The forecast high winds and heavy rain are another factor which has underpinned the decision to close these specific areas.

It is expected this closure will be for a short period of time while necessary work is completed.

At this point these are considered to be isolated issues, and not generally related to the structural integrity of buildings.

The City Council will be working closely with building owners to address issues of potential threats to public safety, and will work to open up areas as soon as practicable."

Just 10 days to go to apply for funding .....

If you’re thinking about a street barbecue or a similar community event between the end of November 2016 and the end of March 2017, you’re welcome to apply for funding from Wellington City Council. The official dates for Neighbours Day in 2017 are 25-26 March. Some suburbs hold their street get-togethers any time in February or March.

Some groups use the funding for the likes of a bouncy castle for their street barbecue, others for signs to promote their event, etc.

A maximum of $500 can be allocated for each project. You need to apply through a registered organisation or society. If you’re looking for support for your own street party, contact your local residents/community group to act as an ‘umbrella’, or contact Council as soon as possible if you need assistance with finding an umbrella organisation, or message me for advice.

All applications for grant funding must be submitted by Friday 28 October 2016. Details are available at wellington.govt.nz...
