You are invited to a wedding and a “book launch”. Dress optional but preferred.
We request the pleasure of your company to witness the nuptials of WAG and FOW who are coming together to implement your vision for the Waiohine. This is the third and last reading of the banns of marriage. Should anyone know and just cause or impediment to these two fine groups of passionate hard working volunteers coming back together in wedded bliss under the surname WAG, speak now, or forever hold your peace. We’re setting up the best way to manage and implement the Waiohine River Plan, incorporating Floodplain Management Plan to make our river, safe, beautiful and bountiful for future generations. It offers the best way to share and communicate and choose how you want to be involved in which bits of your river plan and the beautiful river in the future.
We’ve been piling in the hours. The “not yet a draft plan” will also be “book launched” at the same meeting, along with more of the proposed map set. Everyone will be able to get their hands on the not quite finished story and information. We’re also hoping to re-engage with key stakeholder groups over the next month or two and have them critique the not yet a draft pan to see how it reflects their input and vision. This means that whilst we carry on adding to, improving and tidying up the draft over the next few months, you get in on the act of reading it, discussing it and giving us feedback on it, to help us get it as good as it can be ready for becoming a formal draft for the submissions process. We’ll explain what this means on the night, how you can get hold of a copy online from the 5th, download and print etc., compare to all the charts and maps and stuff we’ve posted up and shared with everyone over the last 2.5 years (yeah, we know, it’s been emotional but worth it). It will be nice to share all this and hear what you have to say.
No telegrams, solid silver, precious stones and cash wedding gifts will be accepted though. The bride and groom will depart before 7:00 guests are welcome to remain and apply to join the worthy Greytown Fire Brigade.

Come and see the first ever sharing of the map of the preferred option for the flood defences and information on the possible stop banks to protect the town. We'll have members of the project team there to answer questions and say hi - and we're still keen on feedback and questions. We should have answers as we're really, really close to getting the new stuff worked into the rough as guts draft. If you miss tomorrow, we'll be scheduling a Fire Station meeting soon where we'll have all this and more for you to go through with a fine tooth-comb.

If you didn't get to spend enough time poring over the maps and numbers or you'd like to get more info from some of the expert members of the team, then remember we're doing it again tomorrow (Saturday) - between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.. We'll do it downstairs in the side room of Greytown Library - that'll give us more space to spread out the maps and see them from all sides. See you there.
By the way- quite a few people asked how we'd narrow down the options and make a decision. We're already starting to get a real feel from the drop in last night of what people seem to prefer. So we'll keep on keeping everyone in the loop all the way through - you're doing a heck of a good job of making the decisions by guiding us through your feedback!
Also don't forget the easy peasy plant a tree meet of the Friends of the Waiohine on Sunday. With them we're making a small but important start on making the river our little slice of paradise.

The joint project team is throwing open the doors of the project and laying out the detailed maps and lots of other information, so ratepayers can see costs, and which properties would be protected.
“We want all ratepayers to come along and see how these might impact them. Whether we are in flood areas or high and dry, we are all contributing to flood protection, so it’s a big deal for everyone to have a say. Whilst we have an awful lot of work to do yet, this is the first time we’ve been able to share this with the whole community and get guidance and feedback to help us finish the job.” says John Boon, facilitator of the project team.
“We know we still have to firm up the information and narrow the options down, but for Greater Wellington, this is a fresh approach to engaging the community in designing every aspect of the floodplain management plan. Our initial focus has been to bring different stopbank options to the table for discussion but we’re also thinking about how the river and floodplain should be used and managed by the community in the future. ” Mark Hooker, Senior Project Engineer for Greater Wellington Flood Protection Department explains. “So we’d really like to see everyone drop in for a few minutes, take a look, ask questions and give us their feedback.”
The Open Door sessions will be in the project room above the Greytown Library from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday July 26th and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday July 28th.

You just saved yourselves hundreds, probably thousands of dollars and helped other Wairarapa people, businesses and farms survive and get by. It's a result and proves it's worth getting up and having a go.
We have now received the news from enough different sources to be able to advise that GWRC have scrapped the proposed 70/30 plus plus rates hike for flood protection from the Long Term Plan until at least the next three year review point. The news has been trickling in since Friday but we just wanted to be as sure as we could before popping any champagne corks ;-)
As far as we can tell without seeing the detail in writing, this is almost exactly what we proposed as a way forward at the submissions hearing on Tuesday.
To you all and especially those who made submissions and those who spoke to their submissions at the hearing, give yourself a big pat on the back. Our district councils (Viv was awesome), Our GWRC Councillor Adrienne Staples was awesome too, Sustainable Wairarapa, Wai Voice and others also stood up and were counted. Together we have proven once again, that when we get organised and make ourselves heard, we can make good things happen.
Three years is a heck of a long time in politics and it gives us a chance to understand the costs of some of the Wairarapa flood protection schemes and be well prepared for the next GWRC LTP round and to understand the full gamut of what gets rated at what in GWR and who benefits ;-)
