Programme for Kauri Glen Track Opening
The Local Board plan to have the official opening on 28th April. However, vandals have torn down the barriers and already done some damage to artwork on the bridge. It made good sense to allow access through the track now. The access is an important link between two residential catchments and will once more, provide a more direct access for high school students when school resumes.
The new track is something that residents can take pride in, being of a standard worthy of showing your guests, and for organised walking or tour groups that will be more able to appreciate this significant natural, scenic resource.

See an open invitation to the opening below.

Kauri Glen Stage 3 Track Development is underway next month. This stage connects Tui Glen and Raymond Terrace through to Kauri Glen Road. It includes a 3-span glulam bridge over the main gulley and new boardwalks to form a high grade, step-free link through the bush between the Pupuke Road and Onewa Road catchments. The project will take until June-July next year.
However for this period of construction, the route will be completely closed for the saftey of the Public and contractors so users will need to plan for alternative means of travel around the Reserve. The only route available through the bush will be the track between Kauri Glen Road and Gladstone Road through to Woodside Avenue and Lake Road.

While major projects on other reserves, walking and cycle tracks on the North Shore proceed, work in Kauri Glen required to protect significant remnants of Kauri bush and to upgrade a major urban link, has continued to be deferred for various reasons.
In the meantime, it has proved impossible to restrict access along the existing track over kauri roots placing these magnificent trees at ongoing risk of kauri dieback. Remember, the only track not affected by closures is between Kauri Glen Road and Woodside Avenue with links to Lake Road and Gladstone Road that provides a pleasant walk.

The large wire mesh barriers were dumped into one of the streams in the Reserve. The Kauri Glen Bush Society has been working with Pest Free Kaipatiki and the Council to try and protect the kauri bush areas and the closures, while temporary, were taken to try and protect the spread of this disease until further precautionary measures could be taken. It seems unbelievable that with all the publicity regarding Kauri Dieback and the presence of it in Kaipatiki Reserves, that there are some people who have no regard for the environment or our heritage and are not concerned about the possible loss of the remaining Kauri bush remnants in Auckland, or indeed in New Zealand. The police have been informed and the matter is being investigated. The community is asked to be patient with the current restrictions and follow instructions in using the tracks that remain open.
