Benediction
UK, 2021, Biographical drama
Cast: Jack Lowden, Peter Capaldi
Duration: 135 mins, Rated M
Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Terence Davies and intermixed with archival footage of the period, this story details the life of Siegfried Sassoon.
A complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War, Sassoon, was decorated for his bravery on the battlefield. But he also became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service.
Sassoon's poetry was inspired by his experiences on the Western Front and he was one of the leading war poets of the era. Adored by the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, Sassoon remained broken by his time in the war and made his life’s journey a quest for personal salvation.
Brilliant cinema. A lyrical and spiritual masterpiece. - Celluloid Dreams
