If you would like to come along and meet the lovely Northland CDEM team, these are the topics… View moreThere has been a lot of interest from recent civil defence activities in Northland, so we are holding a community meeting in Bream Bay next Tuesday 20th December at 6pm in the Bream Bay College auditorium. If you would like to come along and meet the lovely Northland CDEM team, these are the topics we will be discussing:
- getting prepared for emergencies
- learning how to download and use the Hazard App on your smartphone
- looking at evacuation maps and finding out what zone you are in
- a bit about social media and how we run things in the CDEM office.
This is an open meeting to discuss civil defence matters and there will be the opportunity for really keen people to join the local response group too. See you all there next week !

Sometimes we get caught up in the Christmas rush, and don’t take time to think about people who may be experiencing a much quieter holiday season. Contact with older people can help families to connect with what Christmas is really about, and it’s a great time to explore memories and think about traditions.
We will posting 5 tips leading up to Christmas on how you can connect with your older people this Holiday Season.
4. Pop over with a jar of jam or pickles or your favourite recipe.
This will give you a good opportunity to have a chat. Maybe you will learn something about your neighbour that you don’t already know. This social connection can be a great chance to explore traditions and share memories.

If you feel an earthquake that lasts for more than a minute or makes it hard to stand up, don’t wait for an official tsunami warning. Move immediately to the nearest high ground or as far inland as you can. Walk or bike if you can. Stay there until you get the all clear.

We delivered ten Christmas trees to ten needy family groups, after they were identified by the Whangarei branch of the Salvation Army.
Jenny of the Salvation Army Whangarei says: “Although Christmas is known as a joyful time, it can be a very tough period for many families. It is the generous donations of people and businesses, like Jennian Homes, that help alleviate some of the pain and stress at this time of year. We are very grateful to the Jennian Homes Northland team, as I’m sure are the families who received the lovely Christmas trees.”

A Northland woman is warning people who are experiencing extreme pain for no apparent reason to seek advice because they may be suffering from complex regional pain syndrome.
In July Jill Ansell-Douglas fell in the hallway of her Whangarei home fracturing her wrist. She was taken to hospital by ambulance, her wrist was plastered and she was sent home. as was normal for this type of accident.
However for Ansell-Douglas the pain from what was essentially a simple facture became so intense she thought she was losing her mind.
"I was doing bizarre things like putting the milk in the oven and mixing my words. I thought I must have hit my head when I fell - even though I knew I hadn't.
"The pain kept ramping up rather than subsiding and while having my plaster changed I nearly passed out from just the vibration of the cutting tool.
"Friends and family kept telling me the pain was in my head. I started doubting my own sanity, and felt isolated."
"Normally I have a reasonably high pain tolerance - but I was confused, nauseous, sweating, had swelling, burning, shooting pains and an extreme sensitivity to touch, none of which were diminishing as time went on. I even tried ripping my plaster off in my sleep."
Once out of plaster, Ansell-Douglas found she couldn't move her hand or arm.
While x-rays revealed "nothing", painkillers and anti nausea pills were still having no effect.
She asked her doctor for a referral to a physiotherapist.
Hand therapist Julie Taylor believed her patient was suffering from complex regional pain syndrome and started treatment including craniosacral, mirror box and hand therapy which is starting to help.
CRPS is a long-term disorder of the nervous system and not easily diagnosed. was first recorded in the 19th century during the American Civil War.
The exact cause is unknown, but among other triggers, even relatively minor trauma to a body part may lead to CRPS.
As a result of her experience Ansell-Douglas is keen to help others gain support, and share resources and service providers' details. While there is a Kiwi CRPS website Ansel Douglas would like to set up a Northland support group.
"I'd like to set up a group, but am unsure on the format. It could be formal meet sessions or an online chat group. I'm keen to hear from others to discuss options. Please call me on 021 117 6622."

Whangarei Police remain very concerned for the safety of Kevin Charles Stewart, and are asking coastal residents and property owners to check around them for anything unusual.
The 55-year-old left a cabin he lives in near central Whangarei some time during the night of December 7/8.
He has … View moreWhangarei Police remain very concerned for the safety of Kevin Charles Stewart, and are asking coastal residents and property owners to check around them for anything unusual.
The 55-year-old left a cabin he lives in near central Whangarei some time during the night of December 7/8.
He has not made contact with friends or family since he was last seen late in the evening on December 7.
Mr Stewart is of slim build and approximately 169cm tall, with grey hair and brown eyes.
He may have made his way to east coast beaches near Whangarei, so Police ask property and bach owners to please check your dwellings and shed or garages for any unusual signs or activity.
If you live in coastal settlements near Whangarei, please also check any neighbouring empty properties.
Anyone who has seen Mr Stewart or has any information that may help Police find him, is asked to contact Senior Sergeant Steve Dickson on (09) 430 4542.
Urgent information can be phoned in to 111.
