Last day that Tikipunga High School pool is open to the community

Kathryn McKenzie from Te Otuihau Community Development Project

Sunday 19 February - the last day Tikipunga High School swimming pool will be open to community!!

Due to a shortage of funds we have to end the project on Sunday and the pool will not open again to the community until next summer, despite the tremendous success of the project - averaging 80 swimmers per day.

This project was funded through Tikipunga Community Trust, which operates as Tiki Pride. We have made numerous funding applications, a few of which were successful, and have canvassed a number of organisations for support. Many have been eager to express praise or support for this programme. However unless sufficient putea is actually in the kite the Trust cannot commit to contracting the further services of Community Leisure Management (from Whangarei Aquatic Centre) who manage the swimming pool to meet the health and safety standards required.

However we are hopeful that we will be able to find sufficient funding by next summer to open the pool to the community again, for an even longer season.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.

This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
