Mona is a wealthy woman from the North of Khartoum. Her comfortable life as a professional singer is thrown into chaos when she accidentally causes the death of a poor man from the the Southern region.
With Southern Sudan campaigning for secession from the North, Mona decides to try to secretly atone for the man's death by employing Julia, his unsuspecting widow, as her live-in maid so she has a home for herself and her young son.
