Oxford bird rescuer Scott Bowman is gearing up for an influx of hawks following his busiest little owl season ever.

Bowman, who runs Oxford Bird Rescue in North Canterbury with wife Tracey, said the volume of little owls they looked after this year had been huge, with about 30 juveniles coming in for rehabilitation.

That was about 10 times the number they would normally expect, and he believed it could be because of a decrease in bugs and insects, the main component of their diet.

Oxford Bird Rescue has been named as a finalist in the MainPower Community Fund, and North Cantabrians are encouraged to vote for them by Friday, March 13.

From 12am on Friday, the Hurunui and Waimakariri districts will change from a total fire ban to a restricted season.

North Canterbury principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes said the area was still high-risk for fires.

"In particular there are still dangerous conditions around Omihi and Cheviot and not every permit will be automatically granted.

Janes said if people wanted to light a fire, they should go to www.checkitsalright.nz... to check if they need a permit.

A spate of birds dying at the Kaiapoi Lakes is more than likely due to an algal bloom caused by increased housing nearby, experts believe.

Environment Canterbury principal scientist Adrian Meredith said the lakes were currently subject to a warning for phytoplankton cyanobacteria bloom, which can kill animals and is harmful to young children.

While it was unclear whether toxicity from the bloom or associated bacterial infection (avian botulism) was directly responsible for killing the ducks, it would not be unexpected, he said.

Offering a peek behind the curtain, Ryman have released behind the scenes footage from their recent film. Showcasing their passion for life, Ryman residents from New Zealand and Australia feature in the film. Let’s meet the stars.

“If I hear music, I just want to dance – body seems to just move!” says dancer Audrey, 84. Poet Brian, 86, says “Poetry helps me to question and understand the meaning of life”, followed by a witty “– haven’t worked out what it means yet”.

Gone are the days of getting one qualification out of school to see you through your working life. Now, upskilling, online courses and on-the-job training are all part of making your way up the career ladder.

We want to talk to people who have completed micro-credentials, bitesize qualifications for specific skills.

Perhaps you've pieced together a full qualification by doing online courses, or maybe you've taken a workshop rather than investing in a six-month course. We'd love to hear from you - email josephine.franks@stuff.co.nz
