Newlands Fire Station
The Council fully supports the Newlands volunteer firefighters – they do a fantastic job in both the Newlands and wider Wellington community.
We want to work together so Newlands can retain the volunteer brigade while also creating the new park that everyone has been looking forward to.
Our three Takapu-Northern Ward Councillors Jill Day, Jenny Condie, and Malcolm Sparrow, together with Ōhāriu MP Greg O’Connor, met with Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade members this morning to talk about how the Council can help them secure a new site for a fire station.
It is important to acknowledge that while we can look for locations, the decision about whether a new volunteer fire station is built in the area will be made by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). Council staff have worked with FENZ over the last year to find alternatives and have offered a number of sites in the wider Newlands area.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.

The Hikoi on Tuesday 19th
I copied this from a Facebook page: The expected route of the hīkoi on Tuesday is from Takapuwahia Maree in Esldon towards Porirua and along Kenepuru Drive to Tawa, then up Middleton Road to Johnsonville, down Ngaraunga George and along the old Hutt Road to Wellington. They are anticipating significant congestion on the roads between 06.00am and 12.30pm.
