Planting For native Birds
As a recent arrival to the Waimakariri district I have noticed the lack of native birds in the district as well as Christchurch. So I was heartened to read this article www.stuff.co.nz... about how we can attract our native birds back by planting suitable trees to provide seasonal supplies of food.
Having lived in Picton for several years I saw what can be achieved with a combination of trapping and planting natives species. Picton now has an amazing dawn chorus! There are many other stories of similar projects throughout New Zealand. I think it would be amazing if as a district we start to plan native tree corridors for our native birds and see the results in the years to come.
