Republic Closing In On NZ

Australia's election result a few days ago with Anthony Albanese the new PM opens the door wide open for Australia becoming a republic in a couple of years or so.
Albanese has semi-promised a referendum on the matter of Australia remaining under the British crown or becoming a republic with a president as head of its constitution.
Albanese has also a referendum in mind of giving the Aborigines special rights ( something along Maori rights here) as a people who have lived in and "owned" Australia for at least 65 thousand years. And this might take preference over declaring Australia a republic by referendum.

All this means for NZ is kicking our approach into gear on the state of NZ as potentially a republic also. Both sides of our main political parties have strong supporters of such a move but especially the Labour Government. And the connection/relationship between Ardern and Ablanese will likely be close and comfortable and active.

I don't think Australia or NZ really want to be a royalist country under the banner of a King Charles and Queen Camilla.

"This is my 25year old Chinchilla called Chilli. She is a Standard grey colour, and she is the sweetest wee girl, who loves her cuddles and snuggles with Mum, and loves pats and tickles from all of our family. Its very very rare to have a Chinchilla who loves to be touched as much as she does. She is a rescue who came from people who didn't know how to properly care for her. Her favorite treats are dried Red rose petals, dried rose buds and most of all, her Apple sticks. I love her so much."
Remember if you want your pet featured on Neighbourly, email us on yourpet@dompost.co.nz with a recent photo. Please remember to say which suburb you live in.

"I was going to leave the tūī for my checklist until the kowhai or flax were flowering later in the year - you know, for the poses, but this guy just about landed on my lap in the Herb Garden at the Wellington Bot Gardens - he's on a stake by the curry plant, which funnily enough, really smells like curry. He was singing up a storm in the pine trees before swooping down for a quick sniff. Bird #83 in 2022."

During the last two years or so of the pandemic in NZ, the big winners commercially were supermarkets and banks.

Whilst business in general took a big hit and in many cases - a dive - supermarkets and banks thrived.

All this whilst the Government had to find huge loans and spend money earmarked for other projects and promises to help Kiwis get through the crisis.

So while I loathe banks I(mainly Australian) making so much dough and charging customers unnecessarily more than should be the case, I don't begrudge supermarkets in NZ profiting annually by a handsome amount. And yet I do say the line must be drawn on the approx 500 million annually the two supermarket franchises have made whilst some in NZ have been scrimping and failing to gather in enough money to buy groceries weekly and the Government is blamed for the rising cost of living and the rising inflation rate well past the hitherto three percent max per annum.

So the steps the Government are taking are the right ones and hopefully will further pave the way for additional competition from at least another supermarket player.

Supermarkets in NZ were given big wraps by people here on Neighbourly during the pandemic for being so stoic but did they really deserve all the praise? They didn't pay their staff extra for the extra dangers they faced and they made more profit than normal as people staying at home bought more products sold at supermarkets.

Has anyone noted the state of the United States especially during the last five-six years.

Not helping that the USA is the leader of the "free world" which includes NZ.

So they have a huge political upheavel which could spill over and very nearly did on January 6, 2021 and we had Trump laying a foundation for Russia to brutally invade Ukraine and there is still a high possibility of an extension of this war beyond the boundaries of the Ukraine.

And all this time the numbers of USA internal shootings and killings by gunfire going up and up. In 2020 there were over 46,000 deaths by gunfire in the USA. And already this year there have been more than 200 mass shootings (four or more shot or killed) in the USA which is more than one a day. Nowhere else in the world is this happening says President Biden. If he meets with our Jacinda Ardern on her current American trip this will be a major subject.

Of course the USA could simply amend their Second Amendment of their Constitution which says a lot of "baloney" about gun rights. And they can take a course of action Ardern and her Govt did within 9 days of the Christchurch massacre.

It doesn't help that there are many more guns - perhaps upwards of 100 million more - out in the public domain and outside of gun shops and online stores in the USA than the population of the USA(335 million).
