There are secret spots to be found in every city and Upper Hutt is no exception. Follow along as we introduce you to some of the best and newest gems to be found on the streets of Upper Hutt.
1. Rich and Hot!
Six and a half years ago Hutt Valley local Amanda was a stay at home mum attending many play dates and drinking a lot of hot chocolate. 2. Mother & Daughter Team
Meet Agnas on the right, and her daughter Madhuni. Agnas originally trained as an electrician and worked for the railways in Sri Lanka but a move to New Zealand and two daughters later Agnas has branched out and started her own business Kalu’s Sewing Studio. Kalu’s is far more than alterations as Agnas also offers a made to measure sewing service. 3. Building Blocks
This interactive installation, created by Auckland artist Sara Hughes is based on the idea of the building block: it’s an artwork you can build with. Especially popular with families, visitors can build their own cityscape using hundreds of wooden blocks. On from the 17th April up untilthe 27th June at Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre. Whilst at Expressions, make sure to check out the delicious Dough Café, a modern take on a bakery serving ‘all things dough’. Meet Alex. Alex is frequently asked how far he walks in a week, he’s not sure “it has been suggested that I get a pedometer” says Alex. But if you see him at work you really would think he has wheels as he efficiently glides around an Upper Hutt classic, China City. It's a message we share time and time again, and this year, we're calling on you to help us spread that message further.
Did you know that calls to SPCA about dogs left inside hot cars made up a whopping 11% of all welfare calls last summer? This is a completely preventable issue, and one which is causing hundreds of dogs (often loved pets) to suffer.
Here are some quick facts to share with the dog owners in your life:
👉 The temperature inside a car can heat to over 50°C in less than 15 minutes.
👉 Parking in the shade and cracking windows does little to help on a warm day. Dogs rely on panting to keep cool, which they can't do in a hot car.
👉 This puts dogs at a high risk of heatstroke - a serious condition for dogs, with a mortality rate between 39%-50%.
👉 It is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act to leave a dog in a hot vehicle if they are showing signs of heat stress. You can be fined, and prosecuted.

We encourage you to use these - and ask your local businesses to display the posters if they can. Flyers can be kept in your car and handed out as needed.
