Planting ceremony marks completion of Lake Terrace repairs

Darren Petry from Taupō District Council

A planting ceremony has taken place on the lakefront today, marking the completion of the Lake Terrace repairs.

In July, damage to the water and wastewater pipes occurred on Lake Terrace, resulting in one of the largest infrastructure repair projects council has undertaken in recent years.

While most of the repairs were completed and roads re-opened in September, work to restore the final water connections had continued. This work was completed yesterday.

Chief executive Gareth Green said this final ceremony was an important step.

“This was a major event for our community and with the final water connection complete and fences now coming down, it is great to mark the occasion with this planting ceremony,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone for your patience over the last four months - from the community to our contractors to the businesses affected.”

The ceremony involved Ngati Tūwharetoa lifting the final rāhui which had been in place over the immediate construction site.

Representatives from Ngati Tūwharetoa, Taupō District Council and local kura all attended and planted trees on the lakefront, at the base of the new retaining wall.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.

This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
