Fernside School pupil claims bragging rights as New Zealand's top year 7 speller
A North Canterbury pupil will start the new school year on a high after being named New Zealand's top year 7 speller.
Fernside School's Rose Hussey took out the annual International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2018.
The 11-year-old, who enters year 8 this year, has taken part in the assessments since she was in year 4, and last year took four tests: English, spelling, mathematics and science.
She was awarded a high distinction in spelling, science and mathematics and ranked in the top 1 per cent of year 7 participants across the country.
Well done Rose!
Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?
With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.
This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.
