How's your te reo Māori?
This is Māori language week and the team at the Express are trying to learn a few new words each morning.
Here are the words for today.....
* Mihi - Greeting (noun); a speech (noun); to greet, pay tribute, acknowledge or thank (verb)
* Kia ora - Hello or thank you; also good luck or best wishes
Tēnā koe / tēnā kōrua / tēnā koutou - More formal hello or thank you (koe is used to address one person, kōrua for two, and koutou for three or more)
* Mōrena / Ata mārie - Good morning
* Haere mai - Welcome, come here, come in
* Haere rā - Goodbye, farewell (to someone leaving)
* E noho rā - Goodbye, farewell (to someone staying)
* Ka kite anō / Mā te wā - See you later, see ya!
* Ka mahi - Nice job! Other common compliments are ka pai (good), ka rawe (awesome), and tau kē (this is cool!)
* Ngā mihi - A simple statement of acknowledgements, ngā mihi works well as a te reo email sign off (similar to regards or thanks)
