Continuing our series on local managers of volunteers for International Volunteer Managers' Day 2020...
Introducing Maxine and Soni, two of the wonderful Youth Workers and coordinators of the MYTAGS (Marlborough Youth Trust Advisory Group) at Marlborough Youth Trust.

- Tell us about how you first got involved with MYT? [Max] I had heard that the youth group out in Seddon was struggling to find enough adults to help keep it running so I started by volunteering my time. Jo (Manager) heard about what I was doing out there and brought me on board.
[Soni] I was working at a winery. Jo knew my mum and when she ran into her, she suggested that I should get my Level 3 Youth Work certificate.

- What do you find most challenging about the work you do here? [Max] There's never enough time, money, or resources to do everything we want to do, but especially in the area of mental health.

- What do you wish other people knew about the young people you work with on MYTAGs and in the community? [Max] I wish people could see them how we see them. Instead of trying to impose a dictatorial relationship on them, get to know them for who they are and release the expectations.
[Soni] Youth are good at moving on when they don't like things. For some people that means they look at these young people and think "oh look, can't even keep a job", but try and look at it more positively. They can keep the job, but they're not feeling it, they want to do something more suited to their interests and passions. So help them succeed!

- What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with MYT? [Max] Do it! You won't regret it!
[Soni] Come with an open mind. You get back what you put in.

Today is International Volunteer Managers Day! This day is celebrated annually on 5th November by Volunteer Marlborough, the other volunteer centres around the country, and Volunteering New Zealand. This year marks the 21st year that IVMDay has been celebrated internationally.

The theme this year is "What's Next?" which will allow us to focus on what volunteer management will look like in a post Covid-19 world.
New Zealanders are encouraged to reflect on this as we celebrate the importance of management of volunteers. It is a challenge to us all to consider:
- How we think volunteer leadership is positioned
- How new volunteering roles might look
- The challenges of returning to volunteering during Covid-19 recovery
- How we look at our own well-being in order to be better leaders

International Volunteer Managers Day is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the work of managers and leaders of volunteers. Their ability to lead, motivate, and organise volunteers to make a difference in communities across the globe is inspiring.

While volunteering can be described as the backbone of society, the efforts of volunteers would not happen as efficiently and effectively as they do if it wasn't for the volunteer managers who lead them. They support volunteers by finding and fulfilling their passion across countless organisations each year.

This is a day not only to celebrate their successes, but to set goals for the future - building productive teams where people with responsibility for volunteering have a key strategic voice. A strong dynamic volunteer programme needs a well-supported manager and the engagement of the whole organisation.

As part of the lead up to International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMD), we caught up with a few of the fantastic Managers of Volunteers here in Marlborough.
Introducing Tehya Henare-Toka, the wonderful Community Services Coordinator at @plunketnz in Marlborough:

- Tell us about how you first got involved with Plunket? I had recently moved to the Marlborough area and I was looking for work. When I saw the role being advertised, I thought it was a good fit with my past professional experience so I applied. The more I learned about Plunket, the more I realised what great initiatives we are responsible for in the community and what fantastic support we get from the National team.

- What was your first impression? I didn't know much about the organisation prior to taking on the role, admittedly. I'd had my own Plunket baby book but I looked at the role as a bit of a blank slate for me to come in and make my mark and build on the work that had been done before my arrival. Plunket is so much more than just a wellness check with a nurse, it is all about being a wraparound service for local families and their tamariki/children, following the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of care.

- What's the best thing to happen since you started working here? Probably being able to see a project started, carried out, and finished that has an impact on the community. It is so rewarding to see that all come together and see the way it can change people's lives.
