Edgecumbe College pool to open for community use on Tuesday, 22 January
Work is underway to urgently install a new chlorination system at the Edgecumbe College pool, so that the facility can be open to the community for the rest of the summer.
A joint project between the College and the Whakatāne District Council’s Aquatics and Recreation team, the project will see a new chlorine pump and the necessary pipework installed and commissioned by Tuesday next week.
“All going well, we hope to be able to have the pool open for community use from Tuesday, 22 January and keep it open until Sunday 1 April,” says Council Aquatics and Recreation Manager Lee Colquhoun.
“The Council has set aside funding for a lifeguard service, which will allow the pool to be open to the public from 3 pm till 6 pm on weekdays and from midday till 4 pm on weekends. We’re also planning to trial a weekday morning swim session (6 am till 8 am) in early February, and if there’s sufficient demand, we’ll continue that for the rest of the summer too.”

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
