Soldiers make light work of shipping supplies to Samoa from North Canterbury donors
A Rangiora couple’s ongoing efforts to help Samoan communities affected by extreme weather or poverty have been given a boost by the New Zealand Army.
Pacific Island Hope Mission founders Jason and Sandy Watson began sending furniture and other essentials to island communities following a holiday to Samoa in 2017.
They had booked to travel to Apia this month to help distribute clothing, stationery, kitchen utensils and school equipment, but had to cancel due to ongoing border restrictions.
The NZ Army has been involved in the project since helping after Cyclone Gita in 2018, and soldiers from 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion at Burnham Military Camp were on hand last week to collect all the donations from various schools and churches.
Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
