With this in mind, Porirua Libraries have created a series of programmes to help combat social isolation and enrich people’s daily lives.

“Some of our new programmes are about having fun and getting to know others – our book clubs, board games and non-fiction group – and others offer very practical help, like our free digital courses and technology help.”

People can book a free one-on-one session with a library technician for help. There are also a series of digital courses for seniors at the city centre library, covering a range of topics.

“We aren’t all super tech savvy, and that could mean people are missing out on meaningful opportunities,” says Noha Ibraham, the Digital Inclusion librarian.

For more information on all the programmes on offer visit porirualibrary.org.nz or pop in to your local branch.

Hi Neighbourly neighbours 🥰

I wanted to take the time to introduce myself and my yoga studio, Beyond Yoga!

My name is Samantha Rozitis and I am Canadian, but also proudly a NZ citizen. I have taught yoga in Wellington for nearly a decade and opened Tawa's first yoga studio in November 2020, Beyond Yoga. I am also the owner of Float Well, a float tank centre on Cuba Street.

The inspiration to open a yoga studio in Tawa was to bring yoga closer to home. While I have only lived in Tawa for a few years, my partner is a generational Tawa resident - in fact, he, his mum & his grandmother all attended the same primary school! Having a studio close to home makes committing to a regular practice so much easier.

I believe that yoga can change your life. The physical practice is so good to build strength, improve flexibility and mobility; while the teachings of yoga and the breathwork can help soothe an overstimulated mind and promote more calm in your life.

We offer 4 different styles of classes: Yin, Mellow, Flow & Kinstretch. All our classes are suitable for all levels of experience, from absolute beginner to seasoned yoga practitioner. The teacher's I've brought on board are quite literally my favourite yoga teachers in Wellington and they each offer a unique approach to their teaching.

Beyond Yoga is located at 4/82 Main Road, inside Pac Fitness (which is owned by my partner). We have classes 7 days a week at a variety of times to suit your schedule.

Please get in touch if you have any questions about our studio or classes. I am so proud to be the first yoga studio in Tawa and cannot wait to meet you all! ✨

Meet Gabe, who is deaf but sounds like a lot of fun.

"I was transferred from Porirua Animal Control. I am a special dude who has had an unusual start to my rehoming journey. I am completely deaf but that doesn't stop me having a great time! I am a loveable boy who has stolen the hearts of everyone at the centre. I am looking for an experienced owner, who has a suitable property for me to thrive in. I'm always up for a walk or a game to play, and I love to find things to do and keep active. I am looking for a home with teenagers or adults, and a home without cats or small animals. I am happy to play with other active dogs, and love to be social with both people and dogs. If you are interested in me and my goofy personality - chat to the canine team."

Debby from Titahi Bay

We saw some lines in the water and a couple for water spouts around 8:30am just out from Tītahi Bay. Did anyone see them and know if they were dolphins or whales?

Every Friday morning dozens of people who suffer from strokes, Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions fill up a Porirua dance hall to dosey doe, salsa, and disco dance.
But they are not just there for fun, but to improve their brains.
Dancing has so many beneficial effects on the brain that it is now being used to treat people with Parkinson’s disease, which affects about 1 in 500 Kiwis.
“Motion is lotion, getting people moving is really important,” dance leader and physiotherapist Rachel Horwell said.
What do you do to keep fit and stimulate your brain?

The fourth observance of World Bee Day will be celebrated - in the midst of a still ongoing pandemic - with a virtual event organized by the FAO on 20 May 2021 under the theme “Bee engaged – Build Back Better for Bees”.
The event will call for global cooperation and solidarity to counter the threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to food security and agricultural livelihoods alongside prioritizing environmental regeneration and pollinator protection. It will be an occasion to raise awareness of how everyone can make a difference to support, restore and enhance the role of pollinators.
