Toxic algae in the Waikanae river
High levels of deadly toxic algae have been found in the Waikanae river and people are advised to stay out of the water, and keep their dogs away.
There are detached mats of the algae along the riverside at Waikanae's Jim Cooke Park - these are particularly dangerous as dogs love to eat them.
