Sixties pop culture comes to Masterton

Reporter Community News

A Masterton bookseller’s relationships with some icons of rock ’n’ roll culture are still bearing fruit in the form of an exclusive photographic exhibition.

The show at Aratoi gallery in Wairarapa later this month will display images from Michael Cooper’s spectacular limited-edition book on the 60s pop culture, Blinds & Shutters. Masterton bookstore owner and publisher David Hedley of Hedleys Books was an editor and co-publisher, with Genesis Publications UK, of the book, which featured 600 photographs of the era.

During his time working in London in the 1980s Hedley got to know such cultural luminaries as George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Dennis Hopper.

He worked closely with Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, who was one of the editors of the Blinds & Shutters, a project which was born out of the discovery of Cooper’s horde of negatives in the late 1980s
