Grey warbler/riroriro - usually heard and not seen
The grey warbler/riroriro (Gerygone igata) has been my white whale. A goal chased, but notoriously difficult to obtain (for me anyway). They are common birds, that we have all heard warbling away through summer, but they like to hang out in dense vegetation, they are tiny (surprisingly so given how loud their song is), and when they do appear they seldom stay still long enough for me to focus.

We have hundreds of volunteer roles on our website which will help you do to do this! Check out this small selection and head to our website to find more and to register your interest:
