We do not consciously control this part of our nervous system! It is innately wired, and operates behind the scenes. The primary objective of the ANS is to maintain internal balance (homeostasis) and allow the body to respond appropriately to changes in the environment. 🧠🧬🧘♂️
The two main division of the ANS - Sympathetic and Parasympathetic - work to regulate all physiological processes within the body:
🟣 SYMPATHETIC (fight or flight system):
😳 Responds to stress and perceived threats
😳 Prepares body for action by increasing heart rate, dilating airways, and releasing adrenaline
😳 Designed for short-term performance enhancement in order to survive
🟣 PARASYMPATHETIC (rest, digest, recover, heal):
😇 Promotes relaxation and conservation of energy
😇 Regulates bodily functions during restful states, and diverts energy to processes not necessary in stress response state
😇 Allows the body to recover, restore and heal
If both divisions are working appropriately, the body can adapt well to changes in its external and internal environments. When we over-activate the fight-or-flight response, it can inhibit parasympathetic function - lowering our overall resilience to stress and limiting our ability to heal optimally! 🚨😳
Restoring balance to the Autonomic Nervous System allows the body to THRIVE! 🧠⚡️
