The great Lower Hutt tree hunt is on. Council is inviting residents to nominate their favourite tree as part of its work on updating the District Plan.
Cr Simon Edwards, chair of Council’s District Plan Review subcommittee says “We want residents to tell us about a tree in their neighbourhood which they believe is special in some way. It could have visual appeal or be of historical, botanical, or environmental value.
“Whichever it is, we want people to help us identify trees across Lower Hutt that are deserving of special care to ensure future generations can enjoy them.”
Arborists will then assess all the nominated trees against established criteria. If the criteria are met the trees could be noted in the updated District Plan, qualifying them for maintenance costs and protected status.
To nominate a new tree anywhere in the urban area of Lower Hutt, you can: complete an online nomination form at hutt.city/notable-trees, or
email greathutttrees@huttcity.govt.nz
Nominations are open until Monday 22 November 2021.

Wellington City Council is seeking feedback until December 14 on its bike network plan.

The plan includes finishing Tahitai, the route around Evans Bay, and The Parade upgrade in Island Bay.

They are particularly looking for opinions of young Wellingtonians to be shared in the Tamariki Zone - the Council's online space for kids under 14 to have their say on developing safe and connected biking and scooting routes around the city.

Do you or your kids love biking and know how Wellington can be improved? Share your thoughts below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the conversations section of the Hutt News.

"I was just thinking that after such a busy week, I needed to get some nature related well-being but it just started pouring! However there is always something to see on our back yard.
Not only did our resident wonky legged Blackbird bring along his offspring to feed juicy worms from our lawn, but a pair of California quails paid us a visit too and enjoyed a good peck around our lawns. Old Wonky legged had a beautiful juicy worm to feed his young but it kept falling out of it's mouth...
Never a dull moment! Awesome to be able to capture all this!"

"I've recently adopted the most adorable older gentleman cat from Cats Protection Wellington. I'd really like to have Sir William McFloof in the weekly pet section to show how gorgeous and special he is, but also to highlight the wonderful and important work that CPW does.
CPW take cats that come from broken homes, who have owners who pass away or can't/don't want to care for them anymore :( They have them checked by the vet and if they are older and have health issues like William, they are placed in a foster care programme. This amazing programme means William's medical care is looked after by CPW and I care for his other needs and give him a warm home and lots of love.
William has cardiomyopathy, which is a hardening of the heart walls. I don't know how long I'll have with him, but every moment is so special. He is a very loving and chatty cat. He trots around everywhere with me, talking loudly about life. He is great company. We think he has some Maine Coon in him - these above personality traits and the heart condition are common in MC cats. He also has the cutest huge paws!
Having William as pet of the week would show how gorgeous he is and that it's a wonderful thing to give an older kitty love and safety in their last years."

Remember if you want your pet featured on Neighbourly, email us on yourpet@dompost.co.nz with a recent photo. Please remember to say which suburb you live in.

If you’re considering installing curtains in your home, one of the first things you’ll need to decide is whether you’d prefer to buy ready-made curtains or have them custom-made especially for your home.

Get exactly what you want - There’s no need to compromise when you choose to have your curtains custom-made; you’ll get exactly what you want and it will be the perfect for your space. A good company will send a consultant to meet with you at your home who will bring with them a wide variety of actual fabric samples so you can see how different colours, patterns and textures look in your space.

The right curtains for the right rooms - You’ll get experienced, professional advice about which type of curtains is best for certain rooms and purposes. For instance, if you want curtains for bedrooms where blocking light is the main priority, your consultant will be able to talk you through the different lining options to achieve this.

A perfect fit - Another benefit of having your curtains custom-made is that your window measurements will be taken by someone who really knows what they’re doing.

Excellent quality - There’s no doubt the finished product will be impeccably made with special attention to detail. And there’s peace of mind knowing your curtains are backed by a decent product warranty.

Finance - By choosing a specialist blind manufacturer there may be the possibility of a finance option to help make it affordable.

Professional installation - And the service will be end-to-end with professional installation also often included.

Anyone who is fully vaccinated can request a pass by visiting mycovidrecord.nz or by calling 0800 222 478. The vaccine pass can be downloaded as an image on your phone, added to Apple Wallet or Google Pay, or printed out as a hard copy.

Covid-19 Minister Chris Hipkins has asked people to be patient and request their passes over the next few days, as the website has already seen an overwhelming demand since it was launched this morning.

Passes will not be required to access essential businesses such as schools, supermarkets, or pharmacies, but more details on how they will be implemented are expected to be outlined in the press conference at 1pm today.

What you need to know:

• You can request a vaccine pass at mycovidrecord.nz or by calling 0800 222 478.
• If you don't receive an email with your pass within 24 hours, email the My Covid Record team on help@mycovidrecord.min.health.nz or call 0800 222 478. Check your spam folder first.
• The pass will be required later this year to enter some businesses and venues.
• There are separate passes you can request for domestic use and international travel.
