Te Uri o Hau is a hapū from the northern Kaipara region. In 1842, it gave up about 3000 hectares as punishment for Māori action against a storekeeper who had desecrated an urupā (burial ground). No payment was ever made for the land.

Kaipara man found the young female mammal on Glinks Gully, 24km south of Dargaville, on Friday evening and alerted LeopardSeals.org and the Department of Conservation.
Sea Shepherd New Zealand has offered a $5000 reward to help find those responsible for the death.
Seals are protected under the Wildlife Act and Marine Mammals Act, and those harming them face up to two years' imprisonment and fines of up to $250,000.

Parvovirus is contagious and can survive in the environment for a year or more and be carried on to a property on shoes or car tyres, or caught from objects such as bowls and bedding. It could also be caught from the street, especially in urban areas where there were lots of dogs.
So far all the puppies brought in to Bay of Islands Vets have survived but only though intensive treatment in an isolation unit.

Dogs on the back of a truck, trailer or ute, travelling on a public road, had to be tied up with a leash or rope, if not in a cage or crate. The only exception to the rule was if farm dogs were actively helping to move livestock along public roads, in which case they could jump on and off a vehicle.
People caught breaking that law could be fined up to $900 under new Animal Welfare Regulations from October. Read the ministry's guide to the Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations at mpi.govt.nz. Read more here
