In House Technician Opportunity - A chance to Build and Develop Cinema and Theatre Experience
$16- 17 per hour
Whether you’re after the chance to build your technical expertise, or perhaps heading towards retirement; here’s an opportunity to develop and build your skills while working with a great group of volunteers and other staff, all committed to operating and developing Hokitika’s Regent Theatre.
The Regent Theatre is owned and operated by a community society providing Hokitika with a cinema, a theatre, a town hall, and a great café. And we’re open 7 days a week. We pride ourselves on our state-of-the art digital film technology which we’re constantly upgrading to improve our theatre experience.
We’re looking for a new In-House Technician to look after our IT network, and our projection and building systems. It’s a varied role – in an average day you’ll will do anything from adjust our satellite dish for a concert simulcast, set up movies in the projection system, change the filters on the heating system, or sort out a software glitch. And you’ll be well supported – we have higher level support available for all of our systems as well as to provide training and development.
You may – or may not - have a formal technical qualification, but you will be confident dealing with new technologies, and be quick at identifying problems and working through solutions. You’ll also be able to run a routine maintenance programme on the Theatre’s equipment to minimise any downtime. You’ll work with other technical specialists on projects, liaise with our technical partners around the country, and deal with film distributors on film and projection issues. You’ll also maintain the documentation on our technology, and be happy to share your expertise with others. Some Photoshop skills would be an added plus, as would a background in theatre productions or events.
This is a great opportunity to learn about some new technologies in a fast paced and busy environment. You’ll also learn something about theatre craft and the cinema industry. And if you like the movies and shows – we have some great staff benefits for you as well.
You’ll have a cool head, work well with others and have an open and honest communication style.
We estimate this is about 20 hour a week, but there may be additional hours involved depending on the demands of the theatre. And, if you love the theatre environment and are flexible as to what you do, there is also the opportunity to get involved in other aspects of the cinema and theatre as well.
If you are interested, or if you would like more information, then please contact Vaughan Bradley, Theatre Manager 03 755 8611, or manager@hokitikaregent.com with any questions regarding the role.

Poll: Should all neighbours have to contribute to improvements?
An Auckland court has ruled a woman doesn’t have to contribute towards the cost of fixing a driveway she shares with 10 neighbours.
When thinking about fences, driveways or tree felling, for example, do you think all neighbours should have to pay if the improvements directly benefit them?
