Changes to allowed freedom-camping sites this summer
Like last year, we're closing some of the freedom camping sites at busy destinations over the peak of the holiday season. Freedom camping vehicles tend to take up more space than a regular vehicle, and when they stay at a popular location for several days it compounds problems for other visitors.
Freedom camping will be prohibited at Whangaumu Wellingtons Bay, Kowharewarewa Bay, Matapōuri (Wehiwehi Road), Woolleys Bay and Sandy Bay, from 18 December 2022 until 8 February 2023.
