The champagne corks are popping at Hamilton Airport after officials confirmed the return of direct international flights to Australia - and a potential boost to the Waikato economy.

After months of speculation and more than a year of “solid grind” behind the scenes, Hamilton Airport chief executive Mark Morgan said he could now reveal Jetstar will offer travellers three return flights a week between Hamilton and the Gold Coast, and four return flights a week between Hamilton and Sydney.

Some card payments will add an extra 3.03% to your bill at Te Awamutu’s Central Cafe - well over the suggested 2% ceiling.

There’s also a 2.5% credit card and contactless surcharge at another eatery in the town, Red Kitchen, and the Commerce Commission calls both “hard to justify”.

This year Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week, is being held from September 16 to 23. It’s an important week encouraging all of Aotearoa to use te reo Māori in everyday life. Similarly, Mahuru Māori promotes speaking and celebrating te reo throughout the month of September.

Over the last couple of years, Gerda, a resident at Diana Isaac Village in Christchurch, has grown her Māori vocabulary by attending the virtual monthly te reo Māori classes offered to Ryman residents. This group learning environment is run by Anita Gill from Te Puna Reo Māori, a Māori online learning provider.
