School holiday programme for 5 - 10 year olds
Wanting something for the kids to do over the school holidays? Why not sign up for our libraries reading programme?
The programme, called ‘Mission Possible: K9 Recovery’, is aimed at children aged 5 to 10 years although older or younger children can sign up. It runs from 18 September to 28 October.
Children have to help Korakora, our library kiwi, find the missing library dog somewhere in New Zealand. For every book they read, they’ll be given clues to the dog’s whereabouts which they will have to decipher. There’s also a ‘detective skills’ workshop, a special guest speaker that will talk to the kids about what to do when they’re lost, a ‘dog hunt’ where kids find a picture of the dog in the library to go in the draw for prizes, and a finale party.
There are 190 places available at our six libraries: Raglan, Ngaruawahia, Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Meremere and Tuakau. Last year the programme was a huge hit so we encourage people to sign up early to avoid missing out, says Customer Delivery Manager Angela Parquist. Children do not need to be library members to register for the programme.
To register, please contact your local library. Please note that registrations close on 6 October.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
