Wellington Street beachgoers won’t have their revamped beach space finished before this summer, but their new favourite “temporary” pontoon is there to stay.

In January last year visitors to the river-side beach told the Waikato Times they were loving the new pontoon installed as a temporary replacement for the tired old jetty.

Despite frantic phone calls and scouring Facebook, Waikato residents with family in Vanuatu are struggling to make contact after a devastating earthquake.

“To be honest, I’m scared,” said Apia Yawha, an international student who doesn’t yet know how his family is.
