The course takes place on Wednesday nights 7:00-8:30pm beginning on 31 July 2024. This is a History and Religious Studies course designed towards learning more about the complex history and context of the Middle-East and the rise of early Judaism and the emergence of Christianity. More specifically, this 6-week course examines the religio-cultural matrix spanning Ancient Israel, Greek & Roman rule, through the destruction of the Second Temple. This period produced Judaism, Jesus and the earliest Jesus movement prior to the emergence of a new religion called Christianity. It was an era of rapid religious change and uncertainty, massive cultural clashes and unending political turmoil, yet it was also an era of great religious creativity and diversity.

NZTA / Waka Kotahi scam:
- The scam is a text message saying it's from New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, and it encourages the recipient to pay an overdue road toll by visiting a fake website, threatening to take the matter to court within 15 days if they don’t pay up.
- The aim is to trick people into giving away their personal details or pay them money.
- While it is not the first time toll payments have been utilised by scammers, the threat of court action could see more people fall victim.
- The sender will either be a unknown phone number or unknown email address.
Want to report one of these scams? Do so, on Netsafe
NZ Post scam:
- This scam arrives by test message and says it's from NZ Post.
- The premise is that delivery of your parcel was unsuccessful so in order to rearrange delivery. you must click on a link to give your correct address.
- The aim is to trick people into giving away their personal details or pay them money.
- NZ Post advises people not to click the link, but to report the message to the Department of Internal Affairs by forwarding it to 7726.
Think you may have fallen prey to a scam? Get in touch with Netsafe or contact your bank if it involved your bank details.
Remember, if you didn't expect the message and you are now asked to share personal details or money, then stop contact and seek advice elsewhere.

• PHL 216: The Meaning of Life: Wednesdays 11:00am-1:00pm beginning 31 July 2024; 3 consecutive weekly sessions.
One of life's perennial questions, the one that gets the most airtime, especially in the modern era: What does it ALL mean? There are several contenders that claim to answer this troubling question, and our series of three consecutive discussions will explore each of them.
• PHL217: Loss: Wednesdays 11:00am-1:00pm 28 Aug 2024; 3 consecutive weekly sessions.
Schopenhauer once said that life was a series of losses. Like all philosophical claims, it is three quarters true. A good deal of western literature, starting with the story of Adam and Eve losing their Eden home, is replete with narratives that deal with the subject. Today there is talk of losing our own garden home—the planet. This series of three lecturers will traverse the theme of loss—that “dark underpinning of our lives”—looking at everything from the loss of hopes and dreams to the loss of love, innocence and life itself.
All courses are available as in-person classes in Hamilton, New Zealand, live-streamed via Zoom to anywhere in the world with a good internet connection, or as video recordings available for viewing at your leisure.
