Footwear thieves are treating the doorsteps of an affluent Hamilton suburb like a "shoe store", police say.

A six-month spate of shoe theft in Rototuna sparked a warning by Waikato Police, urging locals to keep their kicks out of sight and ring 111 if they saw suspicious activity.

A Waikato Times reporter was able to buy a pack of 10 silver bullets at two, out of six stores they enquired at, in Hamilton.
