Punakaiki visitor centre will be unique in New Zealand – project manager
The new $26 million visitor centre planned for Punakaiki will be unique – with sound and light displays of a standard rarely seen in New Zealand, telling the stories of a special place.
That is the promise of the creative team now finalising design work on the building planned for Dolomite Point, opposite the Pancake Rocks.
The project includes space for a Department of Conservation information centre, a community meeting room and offices for Ngāti Waewae.
But the big drawcard will be a state of the art “exhibition experience” – a gallery linked to the rest of the building by a simulated river – a corridor lit from beneath with streams of light, to draw the visitor through.
