Pea weevil eradicated from Wairarapa and Tararua
Thanks Wairarapa and Tararua, for being part of New Zealand’s biosecurity team.
With your tremendous support, pea weevil has been successfully eradicated.
To our knowledge, this is the first time pea weevil has been eradicated anywhere in the world. We caught it early and acted fast to remove the insect’s only food source, which caused the population to die out.
This good news means the ban on pea plants and pea straw is now lifted. You can again grow peas and use pea straw as garden bedding material.
If they became established, pea weevils could have a serious effect on pea crops. So if you believe you have found pea weevils on pea plants or pea straw, please call our pests and diseases hotline 0800 80 99 66.
For extra surety of eradication, we will also monitor some commercial pea harvests for another season.
