Bold claims: Is Dunedin really New Zealand's 'first city'?
Dunedin can lay claim to many of New Zealand’s firsts – it had the country’s first university, first medical and dental schools, first daily newspaper, and first public art gallery.
You might also hear it referred to as New Zealand’s “first city”. But is that really the case?
“It’s kind of true, and kind of not true,” says Wellington-based historian Ben Schrader, who specialises in urban history.
“It’s correct in the sense it was the first to have its own city council – that happened in 1865. But in terms of being designated a city, Christchurch took that title in 1856.”
