The freedom camping experiment - how to stay in Dunedin's CBD for free

Nicole Reporter from Dunedin News

It was billed as a place to alleviate the pressure of the growing number of freedom campers on seaside communities – and it appears to be working.

Dunedin's Thomas Burns St car park was converted to a freedom camping site in November 2018 after the city council accessed a $79,000 government grant.

The new site, capable of accommodating 65 vehicles for a maximum of two nights each, was kitted out with a tap, portaloos, and a solar powered rubbish-compacting bin.

The site, nestled between the city's railway station and industrial area, was initially slow to attract freedom campers away from popular coastal communities such as Brighton, Warrington and Ocean View, but word quickly spread.
