Consent approved to demolish Dunedin's iconic Cadbury factory
One of the largest infrastructure projects in New Zealand has been given a major boost with confirmation Dunedin's old Cadbury factory can be demolished.
Work to clear several city blocks to make way for Dunedin's new hospital has continued in recent months, but a major stumbling block has just been removed.
The Ministry of Health applied to demolish several old Cadbury factory buildings, including protected facades on Cumberland St.
Resource consent was required and on Thursday morning, the Dunedin City Council announced it had approved the application.
The proposal offers an insight into how large the project is, with the demolition of the older Cadbury factory expected to take 11 months from March 2021.
