Dunedin council steps in to protect Foulden Maar
The fossil-rich Foulden Maar volcanic crater in Otago could be returned to public ownership and saved from mining.
The Dunedin City Council wants to buy the land, which has a permit for mining and is set to be sold after the collapse of mining company Plaman Resources Ltd.
Dunedin mayor Aaron Hawkins says Foulden Maar is rich in biodiversity, essential for conservation and will allow scientists to better understand the history of life, southern hemisphere biogeography and climate change.
