Battle to save 'essential' Foulden Maar heats up
Dunedin city councillors have been urged to save the "globally significant" Foulden Maar from an overseas mining company.
Plaman Resources, a diatomite mining company, seeks Overseas Investment Office consent to buy 432 hectares of land near Middlemarch, an hour from Dunedin.
That land, as described by University of Otago geologist Daphne Lee, is largely grassy paddocks. However, some of the ground underneath has unearthed "extraordinary" geological treasures, she told the Dunedin City Council on Tuesday afternoon.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
