A bus fare to ride your bike: Christchurch cyclists stymied by tunnel

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

From reporter Amber Allott:
----------------------
Lytteltonians keen on riding their bikes to work are being stopped in their tracks by the lack of a cheap, reliable way through the tunnel – and they want the regional council to help.

Sarah Van Der Burch made a submission to Environment Canterbury (ECan) on Wednesday on behalf of the wider community.

The harbourside region is partitioned off from the rest of Christchurch by the Port Hills, and the quickest way through is the 2 kilometre-long Lyttelton tunnel.

But that posed an issue for cyclists, Van Der Burch said, as the tunnel was open to motorised vehicles only. That left avid cyclists with three options; drive their bike through by car, catch a bus, or go the long way.

Van Der Burch proposed a few potential fixes to ECan, like allowing a few bikes inside the bus when racks were full, or either reducing or eliminating fares to get off the bus with a bike at the gondola, on the other side of the tunnel.

What do you think ECan should do? Read the full story here and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Drivers get where they need to go, but sometimes it seems that we are all abiding by different road rules (for example, the varying ways drivers indicate around a roundabout).
Do you think drivers should be required to take a quick driving theory test every 10 years?

Vote in the poll and share any road rules that you've seen bent! 😱
