Caution advised after algal blooms found in two North Canterbury rivers
Health warnings have been issued for two North Canterbury rivers following the discovery of potentially toxic algal blooms.
Blue-green algae (benthic cyanobacteria) has been found in the Ashley/Rakahuri River, near the Rangiora-Loburn bridge. Other access points along the river may have cyanobacteria present and people are advised to check for signs before accessing the water.
The algae has also been found in the Otukaikino/Waimakariri confluence near the State Highway 1 and Main North Rd bridges.
