Labour will make Matariki New Zealand's 12th public holiday from 2022 if re-elected, Jacinda Ardern has announced.
The new winter public holiday would fall at some point during the Matariki period, with an expectation that it would always happen on either a Monday or a Friday.
The policy announcement follows a series of public campaigns for Matariki, which acts as the Māori New Year, to be recognised.
We want to hear your thoughts about Matariki becoming a public holiday. Do you support the idea, or are you against it? Perhaps you have a counter proposal.
Share your thoughts here.

Hundreds of mini fairy homes appeared on trees at Bottle Lake in April, adding to a small pre-existing collection.
Where the creations first came from remains a mystery, but making them became a popular pastime for children and families during lockdown, and now they need to be moved due to logging in the area.
Christchurch City Council has set up a working bee for 10am on Tuesday 29 September, where families are invited to help with the relocation.
“They’ve brought a touch of magic to the forest,’’ forest ranger Warren Hunt said.

The three sales amounted to $21.19 (scarf $10; gloves $5; lollies $6.19 down from $6.99). A normal winter week would see her sell $2000 to $3000 of stock, but most of Qiu’s customers are international tourists, reduced to a trickle since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sales are down more than 90 per cent.
“I still need to pay rent, and then I still need to pay mortgage, “ she said.

A new car park being planned for Christchurch Hospital is expected to provide a further 450 spaces – still almost 1000 short of what experts feel is needed.
Years of inadequate facilities around the central city hospital have seen staff threatened with fines for parking on nearby Hagley Park, medics camping out in their cars to secure spots and nursing staff attacked at night during lengthy walks back to where they have parked.
Plans for a new parking building are expected to be announced by the Government in the next few weeks, and National’s deputy leader and Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee said he had been reliably informed the proposal offers 450 spaces.
Does 450 spaces sound like enough to you?
