Solomon Islands earthquake - potential marine and beach tsunami threat

There is a potential marine and beach tsunami threat for New Zealand following the 7.7m Solomon Islands earthquake at 6.38am today. MCDEM and scientific advisors are assessing the situation to determine the severity of the threat to New Zealand. People in coastal areas should stay out of the water. Stay off beaches and shore areas. Do not go sightseeing. People in coastal areas should listen to the radio and/or TV for updates. Follow instructions of local civil defence authorities.
