Wildfires: Protect Your Home, Family, and Community

Melissa from Emergency Cards Limited

Wildfires affect communities, livelihoods, homes, businesses, families, and the environment, and leave a lasting impact on all aspects of life.

New Zealand is not immune to wildfires, and in the period 01/07/21 to 30/06/22, here in New Zealand there were 4,417 wildfires (see source link below).

Wildfires can happen at any time of the year, so we need to make sure we too are prepared.

Wildfires do not discriminate—they can destroy both urban neighbourhoods and rural areas. No matter where you live, the risk is real, and preparation is essential to protecting lives, homes, and communities.

If a wildfire were to happen - would you be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice?

Here are a few key questions to consider:

Do you have a grab bag ready to go with important documents, medications, clothing, money and supplies?

How will you evacuate and ensure the specific needs of each of your family (children, elderly, disabled) are met?

What about pets or livestock?

Do you and your family have a designated meeting point, somewhere not near the home, in case you’re separated?

You may not be able to use your vehicle so consider alternative modes of transport that may be available nearby, or what arrangements can you make in preparedness?

Being prepared could make all the difference in an emergency, helping you to act quickly and avoid panic.

Don’t wait until it’s too late.

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Nicola Willis will this weekend announce decisions taken by Cabinet to incentivise and encourage a third supermarket player alongside FoodStuffs and Progressive (Woolworths).
